How is FirmoLux™ made?
Our products and all its ingredients are manufactured in a small region of the Veneto Province of Northern Italy about 50 kilometers from the city of Venice from which our product gets its name.
Limestone known as Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3) is heated in large furnaces to produce Calcium Oxide (CaO). This produces the lime powder or “flower” the basis that makes our plasters.
Water (H2O) is then added and aged underground or in silos for months and sometimes a year. The result produces Calcium Hydroxide (Ca(OH)2), Hydrated Slaked Lime.
The Lime is then mixed with Marble, Minerals, and other aggregates and sealed in buckets ready to be used by the applicator.
The Limestone we use is not quarried but dredged from river beds that pile up with stones every spring. These rivers originate in the Italian Alps and Dolomite Mountains of Northern Italy where these stones traveled hundreds of kilometers tumbling down the rivers for decades. This process of retrieving the limestone has a very little environmental effect and leaves little or no footprint on the earth.
Once the products are applied to the wall, the H2O evaporates off the surface and Carbon Dioxide (CO2) in the air causes the Calcium Hydroxide to carbonate making the plaster hard; over time hardens back to its original stone state. The diagram shows the full cycle of Limestone from stone to wall.
